Links to Federal Agencies
The Office of Justice Programs (OJP) of the United States Department of Justice hosts information-packed web sites for several agencies within the department.
- The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research arm of the Justice Department. It supports research, evaluation, and demonstration programs, development of technology, and dissemination of information.
- The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operations of justice systems at all levels of government.
- The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) provides funding, evaluation, training, technical assistance, and information support to state and community criminal justice programs.
- The Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) evaluates programs aimed at juveniles, provides training, coordinates research, and serves as a clearinghouse for information on runaway and missing children.
- The Office for the Victims of Crime (OVC) oversees diverse programs that benefit the victims of crime. It provides substantial funding to state victim assistance and compensation programs, and conducts training programs regarding the rights and needs of crime victims.
The National Criminal Justice Research Service (NCJRS) is one of the most extensive sources of information on criminal and juvenile justice in the world. Most of the documents on the site are available both in plain ASCII text and as formatted Adobe Acrobat files. Its web page is called the "Justice Information Center", and has several main links:
- The Corrections link leads to articles on almost every conceivable topic in the corrections area, from sentencing practices and medical care to riots and sex offender notification.
- The Courts link leads to documents on various aspects of the court system, ranging from witness intimidation and prediction of pre-trial misconduct to public defenders and surveys of state sentencing structures.
- The Crime prevention link leads to an extensive compendium of World Wide Web links on the topic, and to a library of documents on topics such as community policing, hate crimes, computerized mapping, and forming alliances with community organizations.
- The Bureau of Justice Statistics link leads to a rich archive of statistical information on crimes, victims, criminal offenders, and the criminal justice from law enforcement through corrections. It has links to other sites, and downloadable data already in a spreadsheet format suitable for importing into spreadsheets or statistical programs.
- The Drugs & Crime link leads to articles on all aspects of the drug problem, as well as press releases, speeches, commentary and calendar of conferences in the area of drugs and crime.
- The Juveniles link leads to several complete "Juvenile Justice Bulletins" on topics such as the development of delinquency, arrest statistics, and drug abuse treatment programs.
